Broadband Still a Factor
After 533,000 jobs were lost in November, Obama reacted with his most recent weekly radio address. President-elect Barack Obama's proposed more details on his proposed economic stimulus plan. In this radio address, he discussed 5 priorities along also mentioned a committment to creating 2.5 million jobs, reducing the U.S.'s dependency on oil, and improving America's competitive stake in the world.
Number 4 on his list is to increase broadband access in the United States. Is this a sign that technology will play a key role in stimulating the economy? Obama stated that the U.S. ranks 15th in the world in Broadband adoption and that this was unacceptable. He also said, "Every child should have the chance to get online." Part of his plan discussed connecting libraries and schools to the Internet. He mentioned getting new computers to the classroom to enable our students to compete in the 21st century. In addition to increasing broadband access to schools and libraries, he also mentioned modernizing our health care system utilizing state of the art technology and expanding the use of Electronic Medical Records or EMR.
This renewed committment to technology as a force to stimulate the economy is refreshing, but has it been done in the past. Will this be part of what stimulates the economy? I would love to hear your thoughts. For a link to the news story I references, please click on the link below.
