Top IT and Telecom Priorities for the US Healthcare Market in 2012

by Stephanie Atkinson 19. April 2012 01:10

Smaller healthcare practices tend to not identify with technology terms yet seek for vendors to understand their key challenges. These may include things such as reducing complexities, simplifying their operations, cost containment, improving patient care, and remaining competitive to maintain or grow patient lists.  This, however, is not always the case as you start to discuss IT priorities with key healthcare decision-makers in much larger hospitals and healthcare practices that might have a CIO or IT manager.  In an online study conducted by Compass Intelligence last year, 174 Healthcare decision-makers responded to the questions raised regarding their IT/Telecom priorities for 2012.  The results are shown below.  Key priorities in 2012 revolve around data, security, and cloud services.

US Healthcare Market IT & Telecom Priorities for 2012

A major portion of Healthcare IT spending has gone towards computerizing medical records. IT specialists have focused on expanding IT capabilities offered to healthcare businesses by providing specialized integration, system upgrades and widespread adoption of mobile applications.

Other major drivers of increased Healthcare IT spending include improvement in operational efficiency, better access to information – both internally and externally, as well as support for customer and consumer-focused initiatives. Compliance regulations have also necessitated the adoption of technology within Healthcare, with major consideration given to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA, 1996) and Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. Other compliance acts make it necessary for data security breaches to be declared, which makes electronic record-keeping important. Remote Healthcare is also a growing and important aspect of Healthcare IT initiatives, and will drive expenditure on telecom services and equipment.
