Public Safety IT Spending Outlook

by Stephanie Atkinson 28. June 2012 18:48

Compass Intelligence forecasts a CAGR of 5% during 2011-2016 in the IT spending of US Public Safety agencies. This growth rate places US Public Safety among the aggressive IT spenders within government departments. Public Safety agencies have felt the need to be technologically ahead of their perceived threats. These threats, comprising of natural as well as manmade occurrences, have become increasingly challenging. Examples include earthquakes, floods, blizzards, hurricanes, tsunamis as well as acts of terror, violence and disturbance. The increase in spending will be paced comparably across categories. Principal areas of expense include disaster recovery, cloud management, data security, emergency response effectiveness and rich communication methodologies among others.

US Public Safety IT Expenditures By Level (US$x1000), 2011-2016

The U.S. Public Safety market has been severely strained sue to budget cuts and economic hardships trickling to their overall IT budgets.  While spending has slowed, it is still growing yet at a smaller scale.  Priorities continue to shift annually as economic and political pressures at many times direct where spending will take place.  Many agencies and offices have had to cut personnel, so at times this is an area where technology can support this resources gap.  Technology, including communications sytems, mobile applications, and mobile data are all providing opportunities for improved public safety response, better coordination, and improved emergency communications.  Dispatching centers have been increasingly pressured with the need for SMS or text messaging communications for emergencies and first responder alerts.  Compass Intelligence does expect new forms of communication to continue to affect the overall public safety market, and this market will have to continue to face hardships and utilize technology to meet the growing needs and demand.
