In November of 2011, Compass Intelligence surveyed 3,770 IT/Telecom decision-makers and 5,431 Business end-users across size of business regarding key Mobile Application priorities for 2012. Across size of business, the most important mobile application to have linked to the Internet was Business Email. Access to crucial business information is directly linked to “Audio and Content Sharing,” the second most commonly cited response, with regard to important applications to have linked to the Internet. Data is the fuel for business and as the demand for access to company information and content surges the need for reliable connectivity will continue to increase.

Today’s business end-users expect to have access to business and personal email on their mobile devices, and this is shown in the survey results. Put aside access to email, contacts, and calendar information and the business mobile applications market is at the beginning stages. In addition, basic access to business files and news information appears to be an expected application to access from a mobile device but we are not at the point today where this is prevalent. The business mobile applications market is still very much at a nascent stage, as we have yet to really spend business dollars on large scale business mobile applications. Developers are getting serious, so we do expect this to change over the next 3 to 5 years. The next phase of mobile application spending is expected to be around mobile applications to support everyday operations such as CRM, inventory management, data entry, and other work functions specific to the industry that the business works in. Business mobile applications will likely roll-out around industries or industry specific applications.
